The Sims 2 Pets for N-Gage Symbian OS9.1

The simulation game Sims 2: Pets has now gone live on N-Gage, you can download it directly to your phone from the N-Gage application's showroom. Naturally we'll be bringing you a review in due course. Now, where did we put that dog lead?

Gameplay

For those who have been on another planet, the Sims series is essentially a computerised dolls house where you can take care of people and/or animals usually in a normal-looking domestic environment. Sims 2: Pets on N-Gage concentrates on bringing up a puppy in a small bungalow with a back garden and nearby pet supplies shop.

The breeds available are Chihuahua, Labrador, Mutt (aka mongrel or mixed breed), Pug and Whippet. There's also a special robot dog you can unlock if you progress far enough.

The game begins in a very promising fashion with options screens that let you customise the owner and their dog. You don't control the dog directly, but you can call it to you, teach it tricks, play with it and take care of it.

In essence this is a small collection of mini-games:

- Ball & Frisbee Throwing: You throw a ball or frisbee for the dog to catch by clicking at just the right moment on a sliding scale. Click at the wrong moment and the dog doesn't catch anything. Gameplay is identical for throwing balls or frisbees.

- Teaching Tricks: Basically a two or three step dance mat game without any music, use the direction pad to click in the directions shown on screen in order and the dog gets closer to learning a trick such as sitting or rolling, and then praise it afterwards. Do this often enough and the trick is learned, with the dog able to perform it when selected from a menu. There are 10 tricks to teach in all, but the gameplay is virtually identical for all of them.

- Dog Patting: Similar gameplay to teaching tricks, but there's no actual trick at the end of it, just a happier dog.

- Dog Cleaning: Again, similar to teaching tricks but all you get is a cleaner dog.

- Discipline: If your dog does something naughty such as scratching the carpet, a timer appears on the screen and you have to click the direction pad button before it runs out. This makes the owner talk in a stern voice, and eventually the dog learns not to do whatever it did.

- House Training: The same gameplay as discipline, but involving the dog peeing or pooing while indoors. Eventually the dog learns not to do this and is house trained so it only does its business outside. Remember to clean up after the dog by clicking on the pee or poo.

When you combine the duplicates, it means there are actually only three minigames, none of which vary or demand any skill, and they don't get more difficult or interesting over time either.

In theory simulation games like The Sims are meant to sidestep conventional gameplay by offering a customisable world which you can shape to your liking, but Sims 2: Pets for N-Gage doesn't do this. You can't customise the owner or their flat at all, and you can't buy the dog anything except a bed, ball and frisbee (and even those are from a very limited selection).

Another comparison one might make is with Nintendogs, where the sheer joy of seeing the puppies playing together can be enough in itself, but that isn't the case with Sims 2: Pets because there's only one puppy per game. There is no interaction between dogs. Sims 2: Pets also has a far more limited range of locations with just the living room, kitchen and garden.

A third comparison might be with Tamagotchi, where the pleasure comes from simply taking care of a creature and watching it develop, but that doesn't really happen in Sims 2: Pets as the puppy never changes and it doesn't seem to require much taking care of either. This reviewer's puppy ate once a week according to the in-game timescale, and there was never any pressure to balance one need against another.

Sims 2: Pets doesn't have bad gameplay, its problem is that the gameplay is missing. It's not an arcade game, it's not a "sandpit" game, it's not a collect-em-up game, it doesn't pass muster as a puppy simulator, and it's not really a proper virtual pet game either.

There is incidentally also a human career aspect but it's so minor that it's barely worth mentioning. You get a wage every day which you can use to buy toys, food, shampoo or beds for the dog, and if you get promoted the wage goes up. Promotion seems to happen automatically as long as you keep taking care of the dog, and very soon you reach the top of the career tree so money ceases to be a problem.

There's also a list of "goals" which earn you bonus cash, but that too isn't really worth talking about. It's an ever-changing list of four things you would do anyway like patting the dog, throwing it a ball, giving it a bath etc, you don't really need to even look at it to earn these bonuses. Even the bonuses themselves become insignificant once you've been promoted to very high salary levels.

Graphics & Sound

The graphics in Sims 2: Pets are generally very good, with nice bright colours, and smooth fast 3D. Most importantly of all, there is adorably realistic animation for the puppies. The locations are also nicely designed, especially flourishes like the Japanese objects in the kitchen, though it would have been even nicer if there were more locations. Some textures do look pixellated but the smoothness of the 3D makes up for this.

The interface works well too, with a single menu and a series of objects in each room that let you choose an activity. Although this sounds awkward, the camera moves so quickly and smoothly, with an automatic selection system, that it actually feels very intuitive.

There are also some very nice graphical touches too, such as the slow motion catch the dog makes of frisbees, and the way you can see what your dog is dreaming about, which will be familiar to anyone whose real life dog has growled or "run" while asleep in the corner.

The sound is very good, with nice effects, music clips and speech. The speech is the usual Sims gibberish, which you'll either love or hate. However, although the speech is good, the range of phrases in the game is far too small and gets annoying very quickly. As it's gibberish anyway it might have made sense to chop it up into groups of syllables, and let the game assemble them into words at random, allowing for a much larger variety of phrases.

All the breeds in the game, including the unlockable robot. Incidentally, pugs don't look anything like this...

N-Gage Arena

There's no multiplayer of any kind, though there is a league table of high scores. However, as points are laughably easy and very boring to obtain, all that the table tells you is how long certain people have been able to put up with Sims 2: Pets.

A word about N-Gage Point Pickups in Sims 2: Pets is also in order. This reviewer played for about 3 or 4 hours in total, by the end of which they managed to collect 980 out of 1000 possible NGPs mostly without even trying (and the remaining 20 were apparently unobtainable due to a bug). This is ludicrous, no other N-Gage game lets you get all of its points so easily and so quickly. It devalues the entire concept of point pickups.

TV & Keyboard Test

Some N-Gage-compatible phones (e.g. Nokia N82, N95, N95 8GB, N96) have a TV Out feature which lets you connect the phone to a television set. This can be used for playing N-Gage games, or for any other phone function.

All N-Gage phones are compatible with Bluetooth keyboards that use the HID Bluetooth standard, and such a keyboard can be used to control games or any other phone function.

The graphics suffer greatly when viewed on a television screen, they're still just as fast and smooth but the 3D object textures are incredibly pixellated and look quite nasty. The sound is good through the TV speakers though.

Bluetooth keyboard controls generally work on Sims 2: Pets, though there's a slight delay between pressing the keyboard's selection button and the game acknowledging the command. This makes it difficult to hit the mark when throwing a ball or frisbee, though other gameplay aspects aren't affected that much.

N-Gage Application and Games

Hacking Your Phone

It is imperative that you hack your phone to be able to play N-Gage with its cr@cked games. Here is what is to be done:

1. First download AppTRK (package included) and install the appropriate version for your phone.

2. I presume so already have Nokia PC Suite/Nseries PC Suite on your PC (don't tell you don't have that!....lolzz). Connect your phone to your PC via 'PC Suite' mode, and open the AppTRK. Coonect it in usb mode instead of bluetooth.

3. Now Run SecMan.exe (attached below), and follow the given instructions and complete the installation to to finally get SecMan on your phone.

4. Open SecMan on your phone. From options, click on 'Turn Plat. Security Off' to activate this app's capabilities, and also click on 'Install Root Certificate' for later purposes.

Installing NGAGE application

Step 1- install the ngage launcher that i'm providing on your memory card.

The above version is for non- compatible phones. N81, N82, N95 users get the official ngage installer from ngage site.

Ignore the application not compatible error or symbian os pips missing error. This may take 5-6 minutes. Please be patient.

Step 2- install the symbian os pips to memory card that i'm providing after completion of ngage installer. This one is v1.02

Step 3- now copy the text file i'm providing (the one in landscape.rar is for FP1 Phones while the one in hacking tools.zip is for FP1 Phones) to the folder c:/private/10202be9 with any file manager. For example xplore. TO DO THIS, YOU MUST TURN PLATFORM SECURITY OFF USING SECMAN TO SEE PRIVATE FOLDER.

OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED PHONES LIKE N81, N82, N95 DON'T REQUIRE AUTOSTART BUT PATCH INSTALLATION IS FOR EVERY PHONE.

Step 4- now install ngage autostart and patch file that i have provided to memory card. THIS STEP IS MUST IF YOU WANT PROPER GAMEPLAY. For this add proper installserver to c:/sys/bin

This is not required for N81, N82, N95

Step 5- now open the ngage application, do nothing and exit it. After doing this, go to xplore and you will a folder created named e:/n-gage. Exit xplore.

Step 6- get an .n-gage game file from download links given below. Now copy the .n-gage game file to e:/n-gage with xplore, after this close xplore.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SHOULD COPY THE FILE, YOU SHOULD NOT MOVE IT TO THAT FOLDER.

Step 7- now open secman and turn the platform security on, leave it running in the background. Launch ngage application. Installation of game will automatically start. Install it on memory card. After installation finishes, Simply launch the game by clicking start game. Game will start in about 10-15 seconds. Enjoy gaming.

Tested with my 5700, 6120 and n73me. Games do work with n80, 3250, n91 but can't be played fullscreen. There's no solution for it right now.

Getting the application to work on non-compatible phones in Landscape mode like 5700, 6110, 6120, E51
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. Download Landscape.rar and extract 20001079.txt from it. Send the file to your phone.

2. Open X-Plore and copy the '20001079' to the following location C:\Private\10202be9\20001079.txt (overwrite for those already having the app and wanting to get landscape mode).

3. Search out the file C:\Private\10202be9\persists\20001079.cre and delete it.

You can now turn Platform Security back on in SecMan. To install a game simple run its exe file on pc and extract and then copy its *.n-gage file to the Ngage folder on your memory card
OR directly copy the *.n-gage fileto the Ngage folder on your memory card downloading from the given link

1) Is hacking must?
Answer- yes it is, if you don't hack, neither you can paste the text file nor you can install the patch.

2) On n73, when i launch app, i'm getting message- you need to download newer version, download now? If i say yes, it says you already have newer version, no update needed. If i say no, app exits, what should i do?
Answer- for this hacking is must. Ngage application gets installed on n73 even if it is not hacked but can't proceed.

3) everything worked fine for me but when i tried to launch game, screen went blank and it returned back to ngage home screen. What should i do?
Answer- this is because of low ram. Ngage is an application that eats a lot ram. Remove any background application from phone that eats ram such as antivirus, call recorder, full screen caller etc n free some ram.

The Arcade Park collection was carefully designed to revive the

Asteroids A small interstellar reconnaissance spaceship finds

various aggressively-inclined inhabitants of outer space...

Rushman When a furry little animal heads out onto the streets
of his native town in search of food, it seems as though anyone
might hurt him. Yet his enemies should beware, for eating cursed
fruit can turn our hero into a terrifying, fanged creature that
no one can confront

Digger A descendant of Scandinavian knights, giant moles of
antiquity and the Yeti, Digger is the fastest underground animal
known to man. He moves as quick as lightning and with a
portable annihilator installed in his helmet, his hands just
cant help reaching for diamonds

Gold Hunter The adventure-lover and gold-robber, Gold Hunter,
has entered a secret multi-level depository of the planets gold
reserves. On the brave dodgers belt hangs the BFT-5000, a weapon
with the power to burn right through the floor. Yet Gold Hunter
must work quickly, for the entire Earth Security Service is on
his trail

Galaxy Invaders Despite the grave forecasts of analysts and
science fiction writers, humanity managed to defend itself
against the attack of the alien race known as Galaxy Invaders.
The Supreme Parliament of the Earth made a decision to deliver a
preventive blow on the aliens home planet.

Real Tanx The enemys advance was stalled by an unprecedented
level of frost that covered the continent, but theyre still
fighting. Unidentified and heavily armored divisions have smashed
apart the national defense on all fronts and now theyre headed
for the cities. The captain of the one surviving defense tank
knows that only a miracle will save his staff

Riverside Assault An elusive enemy is making it impossible for
the General of Peacemaking Forces in the valley of the Congo
River to account for the missing Red Cross helicopters and entire
provisions trucks. Desperate and tired of the string of
disappearances, the Commander of a squadron of modern fighters is
called upon to detect and neutralize the unseen mischief-maker

K-Rally - Best Racing Game!! - (for PDA)

K Rally is a top-down 3D racing game where you and several opponents have to race around a variety of tracks. You can play dirty if you want, in fact the scoring system encourages it, by ramming your car into the rear or sides of your competitors or even by firing rockets and laying mines.

The graphics are lovely and clearly make use of the Symbian hardware. Although the gameplay is 2D, the whole game takes place in a detailed and smooth 3D world full of tall trees and pillars of rock, with clouds and birds that float past the camera, and lighting including shadows and headlights. The skins which determine the graphics are separate from the tracks, so you might race several times on the same track and it could look completely different each time. Skins also sometimes add new features such as ice or rain, which can affect your driving ability. K-Rally has relatively complex graphics, but you can set it to run at seven different levels of detail if you feel it's too slow on your particular Symbian model. The game supports full-screen mode both vertically and horizontally, although the options menu screens are vertical only and appear with black sidebars on horizontal phones.

K-Rally is a brilliant commercial quality smartphone game, it has great graphics and fun gameplay, with phone-friendly customisable controls and enough depth to keep it playable over a longer period.
